Cingular And Myspace Have Mated

Cingular Wireless LLC, the nation's largest cell phone provider, has made a deal with MySpace.com that will allow MySpace users to access their profiles through Cingular phones.

Under the agreement, cell phone users will be able to go to their MySpace.com page to edit it, post photos and get messages,
the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday.

For example, a MySpace.com user could take a picture with his or her cell phone and then immediately post the image to a Web page.

The new MySpace Mobile application will cost $2.99 a month plus charges for data usage.

The deal also expands Cingular's work with MySpace.com, which includes letting bands use a service called MySpace Mobile Music to create ringtones.

MySpace.com, a popular social networking Web site, already has a deal with Helio, a cell phone venture of South Korea's SK Telecom and EarthLink.

Ya Gotta Leave The Celly At Home

Regal Theaters, the nation's largest theater chain, has begun testing devices in 25 of its locations that allow patrons to summon ushers if audience members use cell phones or become unruly.

Regal Chief Executive Michael Campbell told the Reuters Media Summit in New York Wednesday that a second button will notify management of faulty projection, a third about uncomfortable room temperature, and a fourth about any other problem.

Campbell said that ordinarily customers won't say anything such problems while the film is running. "They just will complain on their way out or, in the worst case scenario, they don't come back."

He said that he expects the device to be available nationwide next year and that it will be given to "mature" audience members, who will receive free popcorn for their efforts
.
Since I can't kick these annoying cell phone using assholes or "unruly" loud talkers in the face, this is the next best thing. =)

MTV's The Real World's Ratings Drop Over 50% This Season

I thought this season wasn't so bad?!
Long-running MTV reality franchise "The Real World" may finally be showing signs of age.

Skein's 18th edition, "The Real World: Denver," premiered to lackluster numbers in its new Wednesdays-at-10 timeslot.

MTV ran the premiere episode at 8, 9 and 10 pm on Nov. 22. In its regular 10 pm timeslot, the epsiode pulled 1.56 million total viewers, while the cumulative total for the three airings was 4.33 million overall viewers.

Numbers also fell by half in MTV's target 12-24 and 12-34 demographics. In the key 12-24 category, premiere was down to 965,000 viewers from the 1.87 million who tuned in for the first seg of "Key West."

MTV touted results for a pair of one-hour preview specials that ran at 8 and 9 leading up to the premiere. Those drew 1.18 million and 1.59 million viewers, respectively.

Channel was also happy with traffic to its Web site. MTV.com drew 223,000 streams in the 24-hour period following the premiere.

** CORRECTION: There was an MTV Press Release earlier this week stating that the COMBINED viewing numbers for the Real World Denver Premiere over the triad of shows shown at 8, 9, & 10pm on Wednesday November 22nd was over 8.5 million. This is up nearly a third from last season’s Real World Key West one show premiere.

Variety countered today that the 10pm showing only pulled in 1.56 million and the 3 combined garnered 4.33 million total which would be less than the Key West Real World premiere of approximately 6 million. Approximately 4 million watched the premiere of the Real World San Diego & the Real World Austin. Followed by 3.3 million viewers for the initial episode of the Real World Philadelphia.

I spoke with MTV directly about this and they provided me this statement (courtesy of MTV) and Variety is now running a correction:

With regard to Variety’s story:
By giving the MTV audience three different viewing destinations, 8p, 9p and 10p, it would be inaccurate to compare any individual airing on 11/22 to previous season premieres. Variety understands this and is running a correction in tomorrow’s paper.

*** Thanks Michael! =) Someone rep'n the Real World cast lookin' at POTP? Hawt.

Jay-Z's MTV Water For Life Documentary

Jay-Z:
"I was looking for a cause to attach myself to," he said. "I knew I was going to some places where there was problems and as soon as I came across the problems of water, I was like — this is it....Three people die every three minutes … from easily preventable diseases."

In the town of Luanda, Angola, he followed 14-year-old Bela, who must fetch and carry 40 pounds of water, twice a day. When he offered to help share the burden and carry the water on a one-half-mile trek, he was taken aback by the sheer strength that was required.

"It's not only 40 pounds … it's water so it moves," he said. "And the roads, they aren't paved. It's not like walking on perfectly paved Fifth Avenue. You're walking on rocks and it's a dirt road and the water is moving. I couldn't walk to the end of the block holding it. I had to switch hands about three times."

"It made me realize, you know they say 'I'm from the bottom.' It's not really the bottom, because you have water, and roads [that] are paved, and you can go to school … You don't have to play out in open sewage. Now that's the 'hood."

What The Kramer Rant Says About America

More reports have surfaced about other instances of Michael Richards' racism. Now, Tony D gives his relevant analysis.
I think that one reason these tirades are so useful to the establishment is that they perpetuate racism by giving people a "screen image," or an Other, to project their embodied racism onto.

In other words, for a racist cat to watch this video and say "damn, he's fuckin racist!", and come to the conclusion "I'm definitely not racist, because I was offended by that!," racism becomes more muted in everyday interactions.

Of course, everything that we project onto the Other remains part of our subconscious, and if we really lose it, it's in our unconscious.

So, the important response to these "outbursts," I think, is that personal reflection is necessary on an individual level; not just for him, but for everyone.

And I think he actually makes that point well in his mostly profuse apology. Racism is EVERYWHERE, but in late capitalist society, it's in the collective unconscious, and it can slip up at the most surprising moments.

It takes some deep digging for folks to get past it, especially when they're rich and powerful. Us po-folks have it a little differently, though we still have our disputes because of our racialized condition...but those in power rarely come face-to-face with people of color, let's face it.

So, when those interactions happen, the shit hits the fan. I'm sure few black dudes have stepped up to him in his lifetime (personally, I don't know why it took so long), and he didn't know how to react, and something came deep within him. It seems to even have surprised him.

This calls for attention, as does the Mel situation (although anyone with the slightest bit of discernment knows that he was racist all along), because it's indicative of some tensions that need to be dealt with asap on a large scale.

So who's down with some alternative media to subvert racism?

First Daughter Barbara Bush Robbed

"One of president Bush's twin daughters, Barbara Bush, was robbed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, ABC News reports.

The first daughter had her purse and cell phone stolen while dining in the city's picturesque San Telmo neighborhood – even though Secret Service agents were guarding her, according law enforcement reports obtained by the network.

The Secret Service failed to notice the incident, which happened during Barbara's first night in town, ABC reports.

The Secret Service had no comment. The First Lady's press secretary, Susan Whitson, was unavailable for comment.

Barbara's twin sister, Jenna, has reportedly been working as an intern for UNICEF in Panama. Earlier this year she visited Paraguay to participate in a UNICEF program for young professional volunteers.

R.I.P. VHS

The folks at Variety wrote a wonderful lil obit for VHS on Tuesday declaring that VHS is officially dead. VHS was expected to last until January, but with High-Def taking over and DVD sales rising, it didn't stand a chance.

“It’s pretty much over,” concurred Buena Vista Home Entertainment general manager North America Lori MacPherson on Tuesday. VHS is survived by a child, DVD, and by Tivo, VOD and DirecTV. It was preceded in death by Betamax, Divx, mini-discs and laserdiscs.

Although it had been ailing, the format’s death became official in this, the video biz’s all-important fourth quarter. Retailers decided to pull the plug, saying there was no longer shelf space.

As a tribute to the late, great VHS, Toys ‘R’ Us will continue to carry a few titles like “Barney,” and some dollar video chains will still handle cassettes for those who cannot deal with the death of the format.

Sad. I don't like how DVDs get all scratched up. I want unscratchable, unfuckwitable DVDs, then I'll be happy.

R.I.P. VHS. I haven't been around that long, but I know it's been a good 30 years.

Matt Damon On Details Magazine

On being selective with his roles:
"I want the kind of career robert duvall has. i don't feel [that] chasing movies like this is going to lead to a 40-year career. i'd rather be broke."

On the hollywood limelight:
"I've worked very hard in interviews to portray a very polite and boring person. i'm actively trying to get away from the overexposure that happened eight years ago."

On interviews:
"The only thing a celebrity can do in one of these articles is hurt their own career. if i give you a really good interview, am i going to get a movie out of it? f--k no! so what's the argument for saying anything, unless you have this rampaging need to please?"

Jude Law Doesn't Like Sex Scenes

JUDE LAW hates shooting love scenes. He found it difficult to deliver his love-laden lines convincingly on the set of romantic comedy The Holiday, in which he co-stars Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz and Jack Black. He says, "Now I've made one (a romantic comedy) - it was one of the hardest jobs I've ever done.

"NANCY (MEYERS, the director) kept laughing at me, because I'd say, 'I really love you', and she'd say, 'Stop frowning and say it like you mean it!' I was constantly massaging my forehead."

But Law insists starring in a rom-com was a career ambition for him. He says, "The past few years, I've been thinking, what the fuck am I doing? Go and do something you want to watch with popcorn and laugh. Go and do it, and have fun."
