What President-elect Barack Obama Means to Me

Barack Obama's presidency holds a deeper meaning for me and others in my community. Today is the day that my enslaved ancestors dreamed of for hundreds of years. Today is the day that my father and mother and every member of my family never thought they would see. Today is the day I thought my children or their children might witness, but I never thought I would at such a young age.

For African Americans, although we no longer pick cotton, get raped by our slave masters so we can reproduce more slaves, or abide by Jim Crow laws, there's never a day that passes when we're unaware that racism continues to thrive. It's institutional, it's environmental, it has taken many modern forms and continued to oppress us. Until November 4, 2008, we have felt that our progress has been stunted. We came so far, but we were not to go any further. Until. Today.

This is a moment all Americans should be honored to be a part of. My ex-boyfriend who's also African American told me last night that he cried when Barack Obama became president. I'd be lying if I said I didn't do the same. In fact, I'm bawling right now and it's gross. I need a Kleenex!

Barack Obama’s win isn’t simply about a black man becoming president. This is about a great man becoming president. Barack Obama secured 96% of the African American vote, the last stat I heard, but we were not voting for him because of the color of his skin. We were voting for him because we feel that he is qualified, intelligent, and capable of uniting this country like it has never been united before.

To simply put Barack Obama into office because of the shade of his skin would be detrimental. Similar to those who may have voted for John McCain because Sarah Palin is a female do not grasp the importance of selecting the right candidate when attempting to make history.

The opportunity to lead is a privilege. The imprint of the chosen one should be positive. If not, the progress one sought to achieve by electing one based upon race, sex or other irrelevant factors ensures that the status quo will return upon his or her departure.

Barack Obama won with the support of every race because he transcends race. He is the American dream, and with his election we are one step closer to electing a female president, one step closer to electing a Latin president, one step closer to electing a homosexual president, one step closer to electing a president with a handicap. We are one step closer to turning dreams into realities.

For all those who are as happy as I am: overjoyed that their parents could vote for a black president, have many family members who voted for the very first time, or simply thrilled with the positive impact this has on the international community - America will never be the same. America has become a better place.

Congratulations to Barack Obama, my sister and everyone else who has worked for the campaign, donated money and voted. The American dream thrives!

Real Housewives of Atlanta NeNe Steals the Show!

NeNe is a beautiful woman with class! Unlike most women on reality TV, NeNe isn't fake, she'll tell you like it is and America is falling in love with her, Anderson Cooper included.

I'm obsessed with The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Anderson Cooper is too! After he told Ellen DeGeneres he's into NeNe and her boobs, NeNe said she'll give him some of her brown sugar.

When DeGeneres admitted she hadn't gotten into the show, Cooper jokingly scolded her. "Honey, I don't even know where to begin with NeNe. You have to sort of watch to enjoy the fullness of NeNe."

Earler today NeNe responded to Anderson's comments, saying friends and family have been calling and texting her like crazy when they saw the Ellen episode.

"I told my husband, 'You know Anderson Cooper? He spoke about me. And he said, 'Anderson Cooper? The guy with the white hair? No, he didn't!' We think it's great. We love it."

NeNe talks about Anderson:

"I would just talk to him and keep it real. Let's just get down and dirty and talk about whatever."

Then she laughed, "I'd wear a nice little top, since he's talking about my chest. I don't know if he's had any brown sugar."

Brown sugar? Bitch ask him if he's ever had chocolate before and if he'd like to have his first chocolate experience. That's how I get laid. It makes the boys laugh and relax a lil bit before I rip off the boxers.

Esquire magazine claims Halle Berry is the sexiest woman alive! Halle said,

"Being 42 and having just had a baby, I think I’ll take it," she says of the honor. And she's a giver: "I share this title with every woman, because every woman is a nominee for it at any moment."

I'm really shocked that Halle won, especially considering how under the radar she's been recently. Amazing! :)

On a Hawaiian shark-diving trip she took with friends:

“I couldn’t breathe, I started having an anxiety attack, I couldn’t stay out of their reach. They were slamming into the cage—they looked so frickin’ mean! My leg slipped a little through the bars, and a shark swam up against me and rubbed off a layer of my skin.

“I tell myself the least I can do is give the ocean back to the sharks,” Doherty says. And then she giggles. “No, that’s just a bullshit rationalization—I’m just terrified now.”

On her best known role, 90210’s Brenda Walsh:

“I don’t think Brenda was a complete brat. She was fueled by her insecurities: not being from Beverly Hills, not feeling safe in that environment. And then the love of her life was stolen from her. That can really injure a young girl’s esteem.”

On life in her 30s:

“I have a great life now. It’s really kind of boring.”

On her new role on 90210:

“I wouldn’t have done it if she was stuck in the same spot,” Doherty says. “There were moments when I hated Brenda, but there were other moments when I saw vulnerability and greatness in her, and believed her passion for life would make her a great actor—but not someone you would necessarily want to hang out with.”

On her ex-husband playboy Rick Salmon:

“I look at what he did [on the Paris Hilton sex tape] and think, God, that’s disgusting. But when we were married, I never had someone make me laugh so much. I was madly in love.”
