Facebook TOS Change, Facebook Privacy is Gone Forever, Even After Deleting Account

Facebook has changed its Terms of Service so that Facebook will always own all of the content users have uploaded or posted on their profile or others profiles even after an account is deleted.

A Facebook rep has written to the Industry Standard to emphasize that all rights are subject to your privacy settings, so even if they don't expire when you close your account, they'll still be subject to whatever restrictions you had when the account was active.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has also posted a more philosophical response on the Facebook blog saying that while the new Terms of Service are "overly formal," they're only meant to give Facebook the legal ability to enable content sharing among users.

Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) in Washington. EPIC plans to file a complaint Wednesday with the Federal Trade Commission asking Facebook to go back to its original agreement.

Nearly 43,000 Facebook members have joined The People Against the new Terms of Service group that was formed after the legal changes came to light. Overall, Facebook has 175 million members worldwide.
